Stay Afloat With Two Or More Toddlers

Taking my two children to the swimming pool can either be a fun or completely stressful experience. While my five year old is confident enough to jump in screaming with joy, my one-year-old is terrified of the water and hardly wants to leave the step. Sometimes it feels like a circus trying to make sure everyone loves the pool, and don’t even get me started on some of the looks parents can shoot your way!

However, it’s not impossible to enjoy pool time with my two little ones.

Understand Your Limits

Dealing with babies and toddlers is difficult enough on land, and the swimming pool can feel like an ocean! Families with two or more young children should remember these tips:

  • Utilize flotation devices: If your toddler is still learning how to swim, using armbands or other flotation devices can be a great way to give you peace of mind while you keep an eye on your infant.
  • Stay close to the steps or the shallow end: Drownings can occur in only two inches of water, so keeping infants on a step will allow you to retain control. Toddlers and infants should always be kept within an arm’s length from you while they’re still learning to swim. If your child is out of reach, they could be in danger.
  • Never leave the pool: It’s important to remain in the swimming pool with all of your children at all times. Don’t take the risk of leaving even your stronger swimmer in the water while you quickly change a diaper or take a bathroom break. If one of you has to leave the pool, the entire group must follow to ensure proper safety for everyone.

Build Confidence Early

Studies show that toddlers between the ages of two and four are usually ready to start swimming lessons. Promoting a love of water and a respect for safety during early development can remove some stress when swimming with children.

The benefits of swimming classes for toddlers include:

  • Improving cognitive abilities
  • Improving confidence
  • Reducing the risk of drowning

Swimming with multiple children is possible if you take steps to take to ensure your entire family is safe and has a great experience in the water.

No level of aquatic skills can replace an adult’s active supervision. Swimming lessons are so that a moment of inattention does not have to cause a child’s life.
